Ironies of the Environmental Age
Ah, the ironies of the age we live in. I was just looking at a box of “Annie’s Homegrown Bunny Grahams” (boy, they are good) and noticed the following on the side of the box:
“Recycle and encourage others to do so with our Annie’s ‘Recycle’ sticker, visit www.annies.com or simply send us a self-addressed, stamped envelope to… Napa, CA”
So, let me get this straight, I should send an envelope via the USPS 3,000 miles away, so that Annie’s can print and send 3,000 miles back to me a non-recyclable sticker that I can then use to tell others to recycle? Sure, recycling is great, but not producing unneeded stuff is even better.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m as guilty as the next. Lately, I sometimes feel like I can’t win for trying. For instance, we are building an active and passive solar, energy star home. Our expected monthly energy bill is expected to be around $50 if not less (in comparison to about $200/mo). In order to do so, we had to cut down 0.5 acres of nice, mature trees, and furthermore, we can’t let any trees get in the way of our solar panels in the future, either. Not too mention the cost of producing the panels, harvesting the lumber, etc. Of course, I know in the end, that the good should outweigh the bad, but still you can’t just help but feel sometimes like the problem is so much deeper than an easy technical fix.
