Google Leads Attack on Microsoft-Yahoo Merger - Yahoo! News
In a Google Blog post Sunday, David Drummond, Google’s chief legal officer, called on regulators to examine “thoroughly” the questions raised by Microsoft’s offer, while reminding everyone that Google stands for “openness and innovation.”
What do people think? Is Google open? My gut says no, but I could be wrong. Google gets a lot of PR about supporting open source and being open in general, but I don’t know that they put out much more open source than any of the other players. I would really be interested in seeing a comparison of open source contributions between MS, Y! and Googs… I will give them the “innovation” piece. They clearly are a leader in innovation, but suggesting they stand for openness is a fair bit of spin, I think. And what’s the big deal about being open anyway. The fact is, every company has its secret sauce, whether its their brilliant people or their widgets, otherwise they don’t last. Even open source companies have secret sauce that they add to the mix. And don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against secret sauce. The incentive it provides, is a big log on the economic fire. Just don’t claim you are open when you’re not.
