“That’s the allure of New York’s proposal to tax…”
Wow, you mean New York has another, new way to increase taxes? What shocking news.
Part of the reason we left NY is because the taxes are so damn high. Basically, they give all the tax breaks to corporations who threaten to leave (it’s called an “Empire Zone Tax Credit” or something like that), and then pass it onto the citizens who work for the corporations that are jerking them all around. The people get fed up and leave, which, of course, just puts more of the burden on those who stay and the viscous cycle begins again because the corporations say they can’t find good people, so they threaten to leave.
Let’s put it this way. In Syracuse, NY, we had an 1800 square foot house in a modest neighborhood that we bought for $104K. Our yearly property and school taxes were over $4000. In NC, we have a 2600 sq. ft. house that we paid close to $300K for and our taxes are half of what they are in NY. And don’t give me the old saw “the schools are better in NY” because they are just as good here.
