“If what I did was an error in judgment on my part, I apologize,” Pettitte said Saturday in a statement released by his agent. “I accept responsibility for those two days.”
Beautiful. While I like the fact that Pettitte is at least is coming forward about it and accepting responsibility like an adult (or at least his agent is, anyway), there is still this underlying tone that it is not wrong in the context of sports. Basically, he is saying if YOU think what I did is wrong, then I apologize, but otherwise I don’t.
It will be interesting to hear what Roger has to say in the coming days. Is he going to play the denial game or the apology game. In the denial game, he just attracts more attention to himself. In the apology game he says, “I’m sorry” and then makes a comeback in two years with statements like “I didn’t know” or “Everyone else was doing it” and pretty soon the public loves him again and he is back in the Hall of Fame.
