Airline Taxes

Just booked a flight out west through Travelocity, and the following struck me as curious:

1 Adult Fare: $202.79

Taxes and Fees: $63.81

That’s a 32% “tax” on my flight.    Nice.  Other curiosity is it costs as much to fly to NYC as it does all the way cross country, go figure.   It’s no wonder the big airlines are losing out to newer, simpler models for pricing, customers are sick of the confusion.

Want another curiosity about this trip?  A colleague of mine is flying out of a different airport to get to Atlanta, then we both are on the same flight cross country.  His fare?  $611.  Both booked at the same time on the same airline.  He lives in Virginia, I’m in NC.  The connector flight for him is not all that much longer than mine.  In other words, the airline is taking a loss on mine b/c I live in a competitive market while making a good deal extra on his b/c he does not live in a competitive market.

Not only are you paying an exorbitant 32% tax for your flight, soon you will be paying for your checked bags as well. I have heard they are going to start charging by the pound as well! Pretty soon it will be too expensive for anyone to fly!
