Really Large File Editing on OS X

Anyone know a good, free tool for editing large text files (> 500 MBs)?  vi is decent, but not great.  Please email me or leave a comment.  I have an XML file that is around 1 GB that I need to manipulate, but vi is not really cutting it, and Emacs wants to load the whole thing into memory.
