Progress, at last

Well, 2006 was a long year, exercise and training wise, but I feel like I have finally turned the corner. After having 3, yes 3, hernias fixed (the doctors weren’t even sure if I had one, 2 inguinal and one hiatal which he “fixed on the way out”) in December, plus the ureterocele surgery back in May, I am slowly but surely working my way back to form. I have ran 1-2 miles every day this week, plus I did an 1.5 hour bike ride the other day and it feels great. I’m definitely going to take it slow and start to add in more running miles and then some swimming over the next couple of weeks, in the hope of being in decent shape to be competitive in triathlon again come May or June.

Mostly, though, I am just happy to be running again. I know a lot of people hate running, but I have really come to love it and severely miss it when I can’t do it (if you would have told me when I was 18 that some day I would like to run, I would have told you “you’re nuts”.)

One of the things about being laid off is that you really have to watch what you eat. Luckily my wife has a nutrition background and convinced me long ago to change my eating habits from the old days of pasta 3-4 times a week to something more balanced and with much better nutrients, so I was able to control my weight quite well through the last few months, even Christmas.

I am looking forward to 2007 and finally competing again in triathlon. Hope to see you out on the course.
