TOPO! 4.2.7 Update

National Geographic has release version 4.2.7 of TOPO!. I have downloaded and installed it on my Apple G4. Despite this being a “minor” release from the previous version (4.2.3) that I reviewed here, there are some significant changes.

  1. Now comes with a Universal Binary
  2. Many bug fixes
  3. New buttons
  4. Most important, scrolling/traveling is much more responsive on my machine. The previous version was painfully slow to scroll to the next section of the map. Now scrolling is nearly seamless.

One thing that I am not pleased with is the lack of trail markings. For instance, Umstead State Park is a very popular park near where I live and none of the trails in the park are on the map. In general, the Gazetteer functionality is limited. The mapXchange functionality does have maps for download, which can be useful.

All in all, 4.2.7 is a must have update in my opinion due to the performance improvements and bug fixes.

I wonder what I am doing wrong - I can extend a route, but can’t figure out how to shorten it or back up if I make a mistake. The manual says this is accomplished by holding the option key and retracing the route, but I can not get this to work. Anybody have an idea???

ctrl-click worked for me. I was able to draw a route, and then erase by ctrl-clicking on the route. It was a bit flaky, but eventually it did it.
