Kona Survey on SlowTwitch
Slow Twitch has posted the results of their 2005 Kona survey, cataloging the equipment used. Seems Cervelo seems to be the big winner this year. Slow Twitch’s interpretation is that tri athletes want bikes custom made for triathlon, as opposed to the other manufacturer’s who seem to offer modified variations on their road offerings.
Another interesting result was the accounting of seat post angles used. Seems the Americans like steeper angled seats while the Aussies prefer a shallower angle. After having my bike fit, I am convinced that a steeper angle isn’t necessarily the right answer; what one really should focus on is having a bike that fits correctly, not one that unnecessarily puts your body into some weird contortion. That being said, there are some interesting results indicating a steeper angle is better. Dan Empfield has an interesting review of studies here. Like anything, however, I would suggest experimenting with different positions to see what feels the best for you. That being said, making bike changes should be done gradually so as not to put to much strain on your body. The winter is a great time to try these things out while on your trainer.
